It took a knight to slay Goliath and don the rainbow tunic. On Wednesday in Ponferrada, Spain, Sir Bradley Wiggins (Great Britain) dethroned reigning three-time UCI World Time Trial Champion Tony Martin (Germany) on the 47.1 km course to win his first gold medal in his final time riding the event. The 2014 Amgen Tour of California victor bested the heavily-favored German by 26 seconds and Tom Dumoulin (Netherlands) by 40 ticks of the clock. This year’s Amgen Tour of California runner-up, Rohan Dennis, (BMC Racing) arrived 57 seconds in arears to claim fifth place.

This year’s Amgen Tour of California was bookended by electrifying 1-2 finishes by fastmen Mark Cavendish (Omega Pharma Quick-Step) and John Degenkolb (Giant-Shimano). On Tuesday in two different stage races taking place in two different countries, both sprinters posted up to celebrate victory and amazingly they managed to repeat the feat Wednesday.
